A thought experiment about getting smarter

If you could take a pill that would make you smarter, would you? The pill wouldn't make you limitless smarter,

but it would make you noticeably smarter.

The only side effect is that it would react negatively with alcohol and so you wouldn't be able to drink alcohol anymore.

Would you take the pill? Pause and think about this for a second.

I think I would.

Here's why I ask: I often have work functions that are accompanied by 1-3 drinks each night. I am noticeably dumber the next day: memories from talks the previous day aren't as vivid. I’m tired because (and my watch readily reminds me of this) I didn’t sleep well. I'm overall not as smart the next day or for a few days after because of the lost opportunities to solidify my learnings.

I know that alcohol is the reason for this.

The idea of the pill is attractive because then I wouldn’t have to make a choice anymore: I would not be able to drink.

Now thinking about it a little more: why do we need the pill if we know that the reason for our limited intelligence? Why not just stop drinking?
